Mini Plastic Audit!

Sitting where you are, look around at all the things. How many of those things are plastic? Look deeper... how may of those things have plastic in them? And you may have to use your imagination for this one... but think about how you got that item. It was probably packaged in plastic. And even further into the plastic maze, that item was probably shipped in plastic.

After your done doing your mini plastic audit, think about this: for every piece, HUGE to itsy-bitsy, there was a manufacturing plant for it. A manufacturing plant that uses energy to produce that item. Energy that is non renewable, and that pollutes. What's worse, the item they produced (being a bi-product of oil) is in itself toxic.

Think now, about the future of that item (and all the items it was associated with in production to shipping to where it now sits next to you). It will most likely be thrown away, to reside along side many other plastic pieces in a landfill.

So, next time you are about to make a purchase, think back to your plastic audit and remember what was involved in getting that item to that store shelf and what will become of it.

I have to literally say out loud to myself "landfill" when I go to buy something, and I quickly realize I don't need it.
